Unsuccessful attemt to move to Evolution.

For almost an year I have been using sylpheed, and am very happy with it. One thing that I miss in sylpheed is the support for vCalendra (.ics), the Outlook calendar format.

With so many increasing meetings it became difficult to keep a track, and so I decided to give Evolution another try. Since I run Debian stable `sarge', I got the 2.0.4 version of Evolution.

But, after fiddling around with Evolution, I decided that I just cannot move to it, for it just kills the customizability and flexibility that I was used to using Sylpheed. Here is what I found absolute crap about Evolution:

  • Cannot use external editors.

  • No option for customizing the width (in columns), or the reply quote (like '>').

  • Cannot customize the reply quotation (as in "On DATE, PERSON said:")

  • Cannot use other key-bindings, like those of mutt or emacs.

  • It is more like a Microsoft Outlook for Linux by GNOME. :-(

So now I am back to sylpheed, and a diary to maintain my meetings. I guess I am more happier this way!

sylpheed-claws - it bites!

The quest for the perfect email client is never ending. Especially if you are on Windows (for whatever reason), it becomes even more difficult to find a good email client. I've been using Thunderbird for quiet sometime now - and I was happy...

...until I discovered sylpheed-claws Win32 release.

Simply put it just rocks! It does have its own quirks, and other small issues - but I simply loved it, for it is very light, and fast. Plus, it is highly customizable, and extensible. I can launch my favorite gvim editor from it too, as well as use mutt key-bindings.

On the flip side, the client is not rock solid stable - but it is okay, considering the amount of flexibility it offers to me.
